Remembering Kiara Agnew: A Canadian Woman’s Tragic Death in Mexico and the Questions That Still Remain

Justice for Kiera Agnew

In early March 2023, what was meant to be a dream birthday getaway turned into a devastating tragedy.
Twenty-three-year-old Kiara Agnew, from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, was found dead in a laundry room at a resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

She had traveled there with her boyfriend, Ryan Friesen, 26, to celebrate her upcoming 24th birthday -a trip she had been eagerly counting down to since Christmas. Friends say she was thrilled to see the Mayan ruins and experience the Riviera Maya.
But the trip that was supposed to be a celebration ended in heartbreak.

A Vacation That Turned Deadly

Mexican authorities discovered Kiara’s body in a resort laundry room on March 3, 2023, showing signs of violent assault.
Her boyfriend, Ryan Friesen, also from Canada, was arrested at the scene and later charged with her murder.

The case made international headlines not only because the couple were Canadian tourists abroad, but because of the brutality of her injuries and the unsettling forensic findings that suggested more than one person may have been involved.

Despite those findings, a Mexican court later acquitted Friesen, ruling there was not enough evidence to convict him. The verdict left Kiara’s family heartbroken, stunned by what they saw as a profound failure of justice.

Love, Loss, and Red Flags

Kiara and Ryan had been together for about a year and a half. Those close to her described their relationship as passionate but volatile -a bond marked by shared grief and trauma. Both had lost a brother, and that shared pain initially brought them closer together.

However, over time, loved ones noticed troubling patterns including control, jealousy, and emotional manipulation.
In journal entries later shared with the court, Kiara wrote about moments of fear and physical harm, but also of love and confusion – the heartbreaking push and pull that many survivors of abuse know too well.

Her family now believes these were red flags that foreshadowed the danger she faced in Mexico.

A Family’s Heartbreak

Kiara had moved to Dawson Creek from Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, as a teenager, building a life full of adventure, animals, and close friendships. She was known for her big heart and her love of travel.

Before leaving for the trip, her loved ones had one last conversation with her, a reminder to stay safe and be mindful of her surroundings. It would be the last time they heard her voice.

In the days following her death, her family launched a fundraising campaign to bring her body home to Canada. Their mission extended beyond grief as they wanted to share her story, to seek answers, and to push for justice that never came.

Unanswered Questions and Lingering Pain

Details from the court case later revealed that multiple DNA profiles were found during forensic testing, including Ryan’s, and that Kiara’s injuries were consistent with an assault involving more than one person.
Still, no one else was ever charged, leaving her loved ones trapped in a cycle of confusion and pain.

As years have passed, many who followed the case remain unsettled by how quickly it faded from headlines and another example of a young woman’s life lost without clear accountability.
